Luke

Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of David's house. The virgin's name was Mary. Having come in, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!"

Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a son, and shall name him 'Jesus.'

The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God."

For nothing spoken by God is impossible.

Mary said, "Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.

Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord. My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,"

because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the dawn from on high will visit us, to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Now in those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to David's city, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant.

While they were there, the day had come for her to give birth. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.

There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

The angel said to them, "Don't be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.

Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men."

As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight."

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry.

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed,

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you.

Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words and does them, I will show you who he is like. He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock.

Those in the good ground, these are those who with an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it tightly, and produce fruit with perseverance.

He said to all, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling.

He answered, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.'

I tell you, keep asking, and it will be given you. Keep seeking, and you will find. Keep knocking, and it will be opened to you.

But the very hairs of your head are all counted. Therefore don't be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.

I tell you that even so there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.

neither will they say, 'Look, here!' or, 'Look, there!' for behold, the Kingdom of God is within you.

He also spoke a parable to them that they must always pray, and not give up,

"He said to him, 'Well done, you good servant! Because you were found faithful with very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.'

saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!"

By your endurance you will win your lives.

He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me."

Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing.' Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots.

Becoming terrified, they bowed their faces down to the earth. The men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He isn't here, but is risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee,

saying, "The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!"

Behold, I send out the promise of my Father on you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high."

While he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.
