Lamentations 3:22-23
It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Interpretation

Lamentations 3:22-23 shows a mercy that is lived within concrete decisions—see "because" and "yahweh's". Let mercy in what we celebrate and refuse—turn hope into steady work. Grace & Mercy connects here: Highlights God’s unmerited favor and covenantal compassion, culminating in Christ (Exod 34:6; Eph 2:8–9).

Context

The setting is Lamentations—prophetic oracle, highlighting mercy. Within ch. 3, a small unit frames the emphasis. It edges toward grace & mercy. Watch the terms “because” and “yahweh's”.

Manuscripts & Textual Witnesses
The Hebrew text has an interesting variant: some manuscripts begin with 'We are not consumed' while others read 'The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.' The Septuagint, Latin Vulgate (4th century CE), and Syriac Peshitta support different readings. The Dead Sea Scrolls (4QLam) from around 50 CE preserve portions of Lamentations but this exact passage is fragmentary. The word 'compassions' (rachamim) is consistent across all traditions. Medieval Masoretic manuscripts (Aleppo Codex, 10th century CE) standardized the text we use today.
